CHIN AUGMENTATION

Mentoplasty

Chin augmentation is the general term for procedures that bring a receding or small chin forward to harmonise it with the facial profile. Together with the nose, lips and neck, the chin is one of the most important areas defining the balance of the facial profile.

A receding chin can make the nose look larger than it is and the neck–jaw line less defined. For this reason, especially in patients planning rhinoplasty, the chin is also evaluated so that the face looks balanced as a whole. At Op. Dr. Mert Seçer’s clinic, planning is done during the examination according to the patient’s facial proportions.

WHO IS IT SUITABLE FOR?

A Receding Chin

Chin augmentation is intended for people whose biting and chewing functions are normal but whose chin is set back or small compared with the rest of the face.

  • People whose chin looks receding in profile
  • People who want to balance their profile together with rhinoplasty
  • People whose neck–jaw line looks undefined because of an indistinct chin
  • People with volume loss or asymmetry of the chin

In patients with a significant bite problem, different treatment options may be considered; this is evaluated during the examination.

CHIN IMPLANT

Placed Through the Mouth

In patients with a receding chin, the chin can be brought forward by placing a biocompatible implant through a small incision inside the mouth. Because the incision is inside the mouth, there is no visible scar on the face.

The size and shape of the implant are chosen according to the patient’s facial proportions. The goal is not an exaggerated chin but one that looks natural and in harmony with the rest of the face. The implant offers a permanent solution.

FAT INJECTION

With Your Own Tissue

Another way to augment the chin is to use the patient’s own fat tissue. Fat harvested from the abdomen or thighs is processed and injected into the chin, giving it more volume.

Because the patient’s own tissue is used, no foreign material is placed in the body. The fat that takes is permanent; however, because part of the injected fat may be absorbed over time, a second session may be needed in some patients.

NON-SURGICAL FILLER

A Temporary Option

For patients who do not want surgery or who would like to see the result first, the chin can be enhanced with hyaluronic acid filler. The procedure is quick and the patient can return to daily life on the same day.

Filler is not permanent; because it is gradually absorbed by the body, its effect is temporary and the treatment needs to be repeated at intervals to maintain the result. For more information, see our non-surgical aesthetic procedures page.

AFTER SURGERY

Recovery Process

The anaesthesia method and duration of the procedure are planned individually during the examination. If it is to be combined with rhinoplasty, both procedures can be planned in the same session.

  • Swelling, bruising and a feeling of tightness in the chin area during the first days are expected.
  • In patients who receive an implant, oral hygiene should be given special attention in the first days because of the incision inside the mouth.
  • During this period, the care and diet instructions provided should be followed.

RISKS

What You Should Know

As with any surgical procedure, chin augmentation carries certain risks. Swelling and bruising are expected. Other possible risks include infection, bleeding, asymmetry, displacement of the implant, numbness of the lower lip and chin (usually temporary) and a result that does not meet expectations. Risks are discussed in detail during the examination, taking into account the patient’s facial structure and health.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Does chin augmentation leave a scar?

Because the implant is placed through a small incision inside the mouth, there is no visible scar on the face. Fat injection and filler are applied with a needle.

Is a chin implant permanent?

Yes. A chin implant is a permanent solution.

Can chin augmentation be performed together with rhinoplasty?

Yes. To balance the facial profile, chin augmentation can be planned in the same session as rhinoplasty.

Is fat injection to the chin permanent?

The fat that takes is permanent. However, because part of the injected fat may be absorbed over time, a second session may be needed in some patients.

Is chin filler permanent?

No. Filler is gradually absorbed by the body; it needs to be repeated at intervals to maintain its effect.

How long does chin surgery take?

The duration and anaesthesia method vary depending on the method used and whether additional procedures such as rhinoplasty are performed; they are planned during the examination.

Which method is right for me?

The most suitable method is decided together during the examination, considering how far back the chin is, your expectations and whether you want a permanent result.
